Coming of Age as a Traveller

At the John Soane Museum, we walked around his old home and observed different artifacts he collected during his Grand Tour.  Soane was also an artist and drew pictures of his visions for London; just as Lucy had her visions of Italy.
In the National Gallery, we critiqued different artworks and how we felt they related to Lucy and her travels.  One in particular was the Combat of Love and Chastity. It represented Lucy's purity being taken away from her.

These two paintings, we found at the Tate Britain, done by Turner relate to Lucy and her travels.  The top piece was Turner's first painting and showed his original view of Venice.  As his views changed so did his art.  The bottom painting is another piece he did later on of Italy that he yet to finish.  Just like Lucy, Turner had a different view of the country after his travels.

After a short boat ride we went to the Millennium Bridge and experienced our own views of London.

  1. Morgan, I think you did a great job of tying in the novel to this weeks locations and making it really about coming of age as a traveler. I have to say, I love your last picture and I think it was a great way to end you post as well as tie ourselves into it!

  2. Great Job!! I like how were able to portray the photos and then tie the novel into it. I especially enjoy the last picture of course, not only that it is of our class but also that you tied that into the idea of travel and having our own experiences.

  3. Morgan, I really liked the pictures you took. You did a great job capturing how our site visits related to the novel A Room With a View. I especially enjoyed how you talked about the two Turner paintings. It helped explain your thoughts in a more clear and creative way. Great Job!

  4. Morgan, good job relating your pictures back to the novel. Like Lauren, I liked the comparison between the Turner paintings. Someone else looking at them maybe won't have made the connection in seeing how Turner's views have changed.

  5. Great second post, Morgan! I enjoyed your selection of photos and thought that your captions incorporated the theme and novel for the week. I thought it was neat how you showed the two paintings by Turner. This really captured how his work evolved over the course of his life! Keep up the great work.

  6. Morgan you did a great job intertwining the novel with our cite visits of the week. I thought it was very cool how you showed the group and us all finding our " own" view of London today. It really symbolizes what a personal experience traveling really is. Great work partner!

  7. Great images, Morgan. I would have liked a bit more detail about what artifacts caught your attention in the Soane and what details in each painting were important to you (esp when you couldn't include a photo of the painting). Don't be afraid to add details! They help all of us see what it was YOU saw in each visit.
